HENDERSON-James A. Sawyer, Jr., died June 4, 2020. Born October 16, 1937 in Brooksville, FL. He was son of The Rev. James A. Sawyer, Sr. and Ruby Chrystene Williamson Sawyer, of Cocoa, FL. He and his wife Jennifer retired to Henderson, NC in June 2006. Jim was a graduate of Stetson University, Deland, FL in 1959, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and obtained his Master of Science Degree in 1961 from Louisiana State University. He attended University of North Carolina from 1969 through 1972. He was a Professor of Mathematics at Kalamazoo College and at the University of Central Florida. Starting a new chapter in his life, Jim attended the University of Florida, College of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor in 1976. Passing the Bar in 1976 he went into private practice in Cocoa, FL. In 1979, he and his family moved to Gainesville, FL, where he began a career in public service with the State of Florida, Division of Children, Youth and Families as a Legal Counsel. In 1986, he accepted a position as District Legal Counsel in Orlando, FL. During his career with the State of Florida, his work focused on children, juvenile court, and abandoned newborns. He dedicated his life fighting for the proper care of and the defense of children’s rights, well-being and other issues until retiring in October 2003. Jim was a member of the Florida Bar, Rockledge Kiwanis Club, the Elks Club of Gainesville, Fl and Board Member of the Brevard County Mental Health Association. A few of his diverse life interests included astronomy, bird watching, chess, and was even a Life Master bridge player and member of the American Contract Bridge League for many years. He was a lover of classical music; especially opera and classical acoustic guitar. A self-motivated scholar, he was an astounding wealth of information. His talents extended beyond simply being academic. Self-taught in multiple topics that intrigued him, he was proficient with classical guitar and fluent in Spanish and German, practicing any chance he got on trips or at restaurants. He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Jennifer Danielle Sawyer; one son, James A. Sawyer, III and his wife, Elizabeth of Hillsboro, VA; four grandchildren, Taylor James Sawyer, Brianna Nicole Pfeiffer and her husband, William; Kaela Mackenzie Sawyer, and Jacob Alexander Sawyer; a great granddaughter, Isabelle Ann Pfeiffer; two brothers, William Sawyer, Cocoa, Florida and Thomas Sawyer, Jacksonville, Florida, and one sister, Chrystene Sawyer Chumley, Austin, Texas. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Henderson on Saturday, June 13th, 2020 at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Robert L. Fletcher will officiate. A visitation will be held from 10:00 until 10:45 in the garden at First United Methodist Church prior to the service. The family recognizes concern over the current climate and encourages attendance at one’s own discretion. First United Methodist Church respectfully asks any attendees to wear a mask and practice social distancing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).
