HENDERSON-Glenn Worth Powers passed away at his home on September 23, 2019 at the age of 97. Born in Chatham County, in the community of Bonlee, on June 3, 1922, Mr. Powers was the son of the late Lloyd Worth Powers and Bertha Pickard Powers. He was the owner and operator of Continental and Jay Tee Mills in Henderson and Mebane. He was highly respected within the textile industry; traveling to Europe educating on current best practices. Glenn was very involved with his community and church. He served on the Henderson City Council for five decades, also presiding as Mayor Pro Tem. As a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, he was a deacon for more than 30 years; a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent of Youth Sunday School. Mr. Powers was an active member of the Rotary Club, thrice receiving the Paul Harris Fellowship and the Honor Rotarian Emeritas. His passion was sports. He was a standout athlete in basketball and football and as a young adult. Later he became an avid and accomplished golfer and was greatly involved with the success of the Henderson Invitational Golf Tournament. His natural ability on the golf course was evident from his many trophies, as he was quick to remind you. He is survived by his wife Peggy Faircloth Jones Powers; two sons, Donald G. Powers (Nancy), Lloyd K. Powers (Serita); three daughters, Jean M. Powers, Carol P. Newcomb (Robert), Kathryn P. Walker (Dan); one sister, Annie L. Wright; one brother, Preston E. Powers; two stepdaughters, Kim Farris (Paul), Melinda Bissett (Jay), one stepson Reginald Jones (Nicole); 11 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and 2 step great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris W. Tharrington Powers and one brother, George Richard Powers. A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 26 at 11:00 AM at Sunset Gardens by Dr. Ronald S. Cava. A visitation will be held following the service at Henderson Country Club. Special thanks to his caregivers and Community Home Care and Hospice for their care including: Shirley Owens, Gail Owens, Dot Bass, Land Marable, Rosa Harris, Sylvia Green and Carrie Anderson.
