James Clifton Edwards, 92, a resident of the Cokesbury Community, died Saturday, September 21, 2019, in a local nursing home. Born in Vance County on February 25, 1927, he was the son of the late Clifton Hester Edwards and Cornie Wells Edwards. James graduated from Zeb Vance High School in 1944 where he was Valedictorian. He was a member and past president of the Henderson Postal Retirees Association, member and past officer of the Zeb Vance Ruritan Club, and was a past District Governor of Ruritan, Zone 4. He was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church where he was a former member of the church choir, a certified Lay Speaker in the Methodist Church, a former Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years, and a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class. James was retired from the U. S. Postal Service and Builders Discount. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at Cokesbury United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tracy Sexton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Buchanan Edwards of the home; three daughters, Debbie E. Kinton (Wayne), and Beth Edwards of Henderson, Mary Ellen E. Florence (Tim) of Oak Ridge; three sons, James Clifton "Cliff" Edwards, Jr. of Anderson SC, Michael Rodgers Limer (Gina) of Henderson, and Barry Wade Limer (Dianne) of Bunn; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Terry Limer; one sister, Hilda E. Stone; and one brother Joel Thomas Edwards. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday from 12:30 until 1:50 PM at Cokesbury United Methodist Church. At other times they will be at the home of Michael and Gina Limer, 250 Tower Road. Serving as active pall bearers will be David Kinton, Will Florence, Adam Edwards, Matthew Edwards, Joel Edwards, and Robert Harris. Serving as honorary pall bears will be Dr. Richard Noel, Dr. Bill Dennis, Dr. M. W. Wester, III, all current and retired postal workers, employees of Builders Discount, all current and former members of the Zeb Vance Ruritan Club, and of Cokesbury United Methodist Church Men’s Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cokesbury United Methodist Church Men’s Sunday School Class, c/o Ruth Moss, 1705 Allison Cooper Road, Henderson, NC 27537
