OXFORD- Mae Hicks Faulkner, 77, died Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at Duke Regional Hospital. Born in Vance County on August 31, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Badger Washington Hicks and Esther Greene Hicks. Mae was a graduate of Dabney High School and Meredith College. She was a lifelong member of Dexter Baptist Church, serving as the choir director for over 50 years, as a Sunday School teacher, as church librarian, as a Vacation Bible School teacher and was a member of the church’s WMU. She was also an auxiliary member of the Gideons International Granville Camp. Mae was a teacher in Vance County for 25 years, teaching students at E.M. Rollins, Kerr Lake School, Vance Senior High, and Kerr-Vance Academy. After retiring from teaching, she worked at Richard H. Thornton Library in Oxford. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter XI in Vance County. In 2016, (Ret.) Senator Tamara Barringer awarded Mae the N.C. Senate certificate of recognition for a lifetime of achievements and service to her church and community, spanning over 50 years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 17, at 4:00 PM at Dexter Baptist Church, 4549 Chewning Road, Oxford, NC 27565, by Rev. Wayne Clark and Rev. Neil Woodlief. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. After the service, Dexter Church invites family and friends to join the Faulkner Family for dinner in the church fellowship hall for a celebration of Mae’s life. Mae is survived by her husband, Jerry Arnold Faulkner of the home; her son, Brandon H. Faulkner of Charlotte; her daughter, Tara F. Graham and husband Steve of Vance County; and three grandchildren, Brendan C. Graham, Maria Kate Graham and Benjamin C. Faulkner; John Payne and wife Tracy and children Kayleigh Payne Burns, Declan, Cassidy, Aidan and Shay Payne of Wilmington, NC. She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia H. Fuller. Serving as active pallbearers will be Brendan C. Graham, Benjamin C. Faulkner, R. Bailey Barker, Rodney N. Dickerson, Chris P. Nutt, N. Keith Jones, J. Thomas "Tommy" Bennett, Jr., Thomas B. Harris, Robert "Robbie" W. Fuller Jr., Jonathan "Jon" T. Fuller. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Norwood, C.T. Norwood, Carlton Lee Norwood, Robert Dickerson, Gideon’s and Gideon’s wives, and members of the Young People’s Sunday School Class and the Hicksboro Volunteer Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideon’s International, PO Box 933, Oxford, NC 27565 or Dexter Baptist Church Benevolent Fund, 6661 Huntsboro Road, Oxford, NC 27565.
